Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “değersiz sindirilebilirler”) teşhismlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine sargılanmasıyla oluşan kısa polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino asit kalıntısı ile öbürü arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” yahut peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]
Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (yahut çok nüshada polipeptit alt birimi çitndırır). Gerçek fark peptitlerin kısa, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]
Protein sentezi esnasında her amino asit, başka amino asite devamlı, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle sargılanır. Polipeptid yapısına taşlıklan amino asitlerin her biri yapıya peptid sargılarıyla sargılanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu esnasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir sutaş çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]
Vasati bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Bilindik en uzun polipeptit, ortalama 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda mevcut “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine taşlıklan amino asitlere kalıntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki kalıntı, bağ yapmamış, serbest amino grubu çitndırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin başka ucundaki serbest α-karboksil grubu olan kalıntıya C ucu adı verilir.
